[arm-allstar] G-Drive functionality to a USB drive instead?

Carl,

 This is already a file-backup and file-restore script in /usr/local/sbin
for your use. These allow direct backing up to either a tar file on the
system which you can then transfer elsewhere or you can backup directly to
a USB stick plugged into the Pi.

There is a config file that has default backup files set but you can change
it to your liking. See the backing up your server howto at hamvoip.org.
