I got this info from Doug WA3DSP, and tested it and it is accurate:
Monitoring a node means you hear that node but you cannot talk back to
them.
Anyone connected to your node can also hear the remote node but they don't
know that they are connected in a one way mode and when they hear them they
try to talk back and think something is wrong! It can be confusing.
*Local monitor* means you hear the remote node and again cannot talk to
them BUT, it does not go beyond your node if you are also connected
elsewhere. This is generally the mode you should use as it means others
don't hear the node you are monitoring and you know because you connected
it that it is one way.
SO. If I have a remote node in Monitor mode. I can hear the traffic from
that node, but cannot transmit back to that remote node. Also, anybody
else connected to me will also hear that traffic, but cannot talk back.
If I have a remote node in* Local Monitor* mode, then again I can hear the
traffic from that node, but cannot transmit back to that remote node,
However, anybody else connected to me will NOT hear the traffic from the
remote node.
I hope this is clear and matches what I have experienced. Please advise if
somebody believes this is worng.
