[arm-allstar] newbie RB-USB RIM questions

Hello,
This is a basic newbie question. I'm hoping someone with the Repeater
Builder RIM can lend some insight. I have the RB-USB-RIM (not the lite),
and I've the most recent RPi2-3-4_V1.6-01 + updates installed. I basically
did the defaults/recommended when setting up. I wanted to test the USB-RIM
before going through and making the radio connections (will be a pair of
Vertex Standards modified to the 6M band).
Under simple-usb-tune, I went to do the Flash (Toggle PTT and Tone output
several times) option, but it did not blink the PTT on the RIM. Neither did
E) Toggle Transmit Test.
I do have power on, the PC heartbeat light is blinking. I'm just not sure
if it's communicating. Should the PTT be able to light up even without the
cable connected? I'm more used to a sound interface like the Signalink,
which lights up the PTT (and you can hear the relay click) when it would be
transmitting (even without a radio connected).
Thanks for your help,
John/KB3DFZ
