Okay, sounds good. Since the ssh keys didn't get generated, it's possible 
other files may be missing of subtly corrupted.
BTW, I'll mention that a great many users have adopted LM2596S based DC-DC
switchers. They're readily available in most locations. These have
adjustable output voltage, which is frequently pre-set to maximum.  So,
make sure to set the voltage before installation! Here is an example link
