Echolink works extremely well on the HamVOIP distribution, and links Allstar to any connected Echolink node. I have used this extensively, and after some corrections and editing of the code that was done about 2 years ago, the module is extremely stable. Note everyone has Allstar at their disposal, but I have kept track of many friends by logging them into my Echolink, while I talk to them via Allstar.
Remember the the port forwarding is UDP for 5198 and 5199, plus 5200 which is TCP. This could be the problem if the wrong port setting was used.
