John,
The thing we call a FOB is a small board or adapter that converts digital
USB signals to audio or a D/A Digital to analog and conversely converts
audio signal to digital or an A/D analog to digital. This passes the analog
audio input and output from your transmitter and receiver to the Pi via the
USB. It also sends and receives digital signals (COS and PTT) to and from
the radio. We call it a FOB. They are available from many sources
specifically for a hamvoip connection but you can also modify a cheap
Chinese one if you have that capability.
So a complete hamvoip node would be made up of a radio, a FOB, a Raspbery
Pi with an SD card load with the software and power supply. There is quite
a bit of info a the hamvoip.org website especially in the howto's. If you
have any other questions I would be glad to answer them.
