Mike, one should always investigate "top" (table of processes) before 
choosing the reboot option. One can "k" (kill) any selected PID (process 
ID) that is consuming excessive CPU %. Identifying the offending process 
helps to prevent further occurrences of same.

While running top, "?" or "h" provides important command help.
