I don't know what you define as "expensive", but you are not going to go
"miles away" without using something made for doing that.

Take a look at this.

Use 2 of these and create your own p2p link.  You don't have to have
internet, this just creates a bridge between 2 points and will go "miles
away".

Depending on how many miles you might need to use a larger units.
