I just put an Allstar node together using a mobile radio rather than an
HT. While researching, I found that the TYT TH-9000D has been used in the
past with some fairly easy modifications. However, I also learned that
those radios are prone to failure over time. Instead, I went with an Alinco
DR-435 which requires no modification at all. It is ready to go our of the
box with a DB9 connector containing the needed connections.Furthermore, the
Alinco have received good reviews. Like the TYT TH-9000D series radios, the
Alinco DR series can be had in 2M, 1.25M and 70cm ham bands. If you're
happy with a 2M radio, the Alinco is not much more than the TYT radio.
