Thanks for the help.
i used for better or worse go daddy for the web address.
what i find a little confusing is they had "a" records for my domaine that point to their servers, that confused me.
that was due to me setting it up via their "HOSTS" page.
i deleted all of that and just put in the "a" record in the dns settings and all seems OK now.

If you go to the control panel for your domain registrar and go to your records for your domain there's a couple of "records" you need to make active.  You need AT LEAST two!

I use a couple of different registrar services like DYN.com (DYNdns) or Namecheap.com  Here's an example for "texasrepeaternetwork.net"

The first "service record" you HAVE to have is your "A-record".  Here's an example:  on DYN.com  the hostname is "texasrepeaternetwork.net" and the details are listed as the IP address.  On Namecheap.com the record type is A record, the host is @ (meaning at this record) and the value is the IP address.

The second "service record" you HAVE to have is your alias "CNAME record".  Here's an example: on DYN.com the hostname is www.texasrepeaternetwork and the details are texasrepeaternetwork (referring to your A-record).  On Namecheap.com the record type is CNAME record the host is www and the value is texasrepeaternetwork.net.

These are the two records so that when anybody types in http://texasrepeaternetwork.net/ OR http://www.texasrepeaternetwork.net/ the DNS servers will point them towards the IP address you reside at.  In my experience, you need both of these in order for people to find you.  The only other record you may need is a DNS entry for your mail server called an "MX record".  Unless you really want to run your own Email server, you do NOT need an "MX record".  I do NOT recommend you run your own mail server as it really does make you a target for hackers!

So to make it all work, you only need two, possibly three records for the world to find your static IP address...

Now, just to make things more complicated (sorry, LOL) you can have more than one website address pointing to that ONE static IP address.  But that requires some more editing to your apache2 config file to create multiple "Virtual host" sites on that server.  I have a couple of static IP's out there, with as many as five or six websites sitting on the same server at their IP addresses...  

For example - texasrepeaternetwork.net is listed on DNS as 50.27.185.63.  But that same address also hosts other sites like bluebonnetcommunications.com, bluebonnetcommunications.net, atozmobilehomerepair.com and washingtoncountyares.org - but it also hosts 45441.mooo.com.  Each of those are all on different DNS servers, but they all point to the same IP address...

If you need a little more coaching and explanation, please feel free to contact me "off list" and I can help you understand it all - because it IS a little confusing!  Each DNS servers control panels and their terms are a little different - it's just more than one way to skin a cat...  The same cat...  At the same address...

I know that when I change these settings on DYN.com the changes happen in a matter of seconds.  On Namecheap.com, they can sometimes take as long as 30 minutes for the change to happen for folks out there on the Internet.  But those two records listed above are the only ones you need setup in order for things to work...  And don't run an Email server unless you really really need to.

Do you have a static IP?

If so, set it in your A record and stop the forwarding in your registrar
dns settings.
