Hi Sean,

Love your pocket node and yes, I built something very similar using a Baofeng UV-3R a couple years ago using an older pi and an external Wi-FI dongle.  I switched it over to the pi3B with the built-in Wi-Fi when the pi3B came out and it works fine.  I still hoped to be able to make the node self powered (battery) and Carry-able either in my pocket or on my belt which is not really a very good option with the size and current requirements of the pi3B.  It could be done with the pi3B, and 2 or 3 18650 Li ion batteries but the size would be too large to put in my pocket, or clip to my belt.

I understand the Pi Zero is half the size of the Pi3, but have you seen my
"pocket node" based on a Pi3?
