We are about to merge the 2/3B and 3B+ repositories. Currently the code for
the 2/3B/3B+ is only available as a download from the hamvoip.org website.
The update will involve a kernel update from 4.4.44-1-ARCH to 4.14.31. The
4.4.44-1 Kernel although still very much usable is now over a year old and
due for an update.
This will be a worthwhile update for all users. It will also make it
possible, once you do the update, to use your current SD card on a Pi 3B+
if you desire. The update will take a little longer than you are probably
use to so please be patient when doing it. Never stop an update midstream.
It also will require a reboot of the server which will be noted in the
update. It is always recommended that users do backups if they have made a
lot of changes in their configuration. The file-backup.sh and
file-restore.sh scripts are ideal for doing this. In most all cases it is
not necessary to back up your entire SD card. These scripts allow you to
save the pertinent information to a USB stick installed on the Pi. You can
even use the same USB stick for all of your Pi's since the host name is
part of the file name.
Also be aware that our updates are "rolling updates" meaning that you will
get this update when you update any time in the future even if you do not
do it as it is released.
The 3B+ kernel update has been thoroughly tested and is working very well.
The Pi 3B+ hardware has several advantages over the 3B including a faster
processor speed (1.4Ghz vs. 1.2Ghz), better power management, and a 2.4Ghz
and 5Ghz WIFI that appears to work better than the 3B.
This message is just to notify you about the future release of the update
sometime on May 24 or 25. An announcement will be made on this list when
the update is available. You would use the standard ADMIN menu item 1.
