Chris,

statpost in rpt.conf reports the status of your node to Allstar so it
appears in the status listings and bubble chart. It has absolutely no
bearing on whether your node works properly or not.

For a fixed station the downside of not having statpost active is that no
one else knows you are online and therefore would not connect to you. If
you only connect out then that is not an issue. Not having it in there has
the side benefit of making your node more private. Of course also not port
forwarding the iax port would have the same effect. Not having both would
be even more private. This is your choice.

For a mobile node using a hotspot the downside to having statpost active is
increased data usage as everything you do key, unkey, connect, disconnect,
etc.
is sent to the status server. Also since in most all cases no one can
connect TO you when using a hotspot there is really no reason to have it in
there.

Some people have the habit of looking at the Allstar status at
allstarlink.org to see if there node is listed. If statpost is turned off
(commented out) then you will not be listed there. Again this does not mean
your node is not working. Checking locally using the check_reg.sh command
will show if you are registered and in the database is assurance you are OK.
