Yes, this attack is an example where the actual protocol (WPA2) is sound.
The problem was with bugs introduced in the IMPLEMENTATION of the
protocol.
....So, at least we don't now need a WPA3 to replace WPA2!
Note that your Access Point devices need to be updated, too!
