Dave,
This can very occasionally happen when an update gets interrupted and also
if you have not updated for awhile - since July - there was a fix for this
in a later update. Do this -
rm -f /var/lib/pacman/db.lck
Then try the update again. This should fix it. This removal is now done at
each boot just in case there was a remnant left behind.
