anything you send to syslog goes into the journal before it gets to any syslog 
daemon that you have installed (unless you really fight systemd to disable this)

If you do get the logs out onto the filesystem, logrotate is the default tool 
for Linux systems, you can configure it to rotate based on size or time, so you 
can avoid the 'empty logs' problem described earlier.

so just write your data to syslog and let either journal or logrotate take care 
of the log size issue.
