Yep, and it affects Allmon2 as well. 

I suggested adding a warning as an Issue on the allmon2 GitHub, but apparently they did not "git" to it yet. 
Not sure whether supermon is completely independent or if it is based on allmon2, but it has the issue too.

"An hour or two"... boy you're good. It took me longer than that to figure it out. 
Asterisk seems OK with "!" in passwords so this was not my first guess when I found allmon2 and supermon did not work.

The best thing of course would be for allmon2 and supermon to allow the "!", but I realize this could be difficult or impossible. 
Hence, I agree with you that a WARNING is warranted.
