Hi Chris,

Personally speaking, it's hard to beat surplus commercial gear. I've got
many Motorola MaxTrac's (45W), MaraTrac's (110W) and GE Rangr's (110W). 
These radios can usually be obtained in the $25 range with some careful 
shopping.
 
For "ham" duty cycles, turn the MaxTrac's down to about 25W, MaraTrac's
and Rangr's down to about 80W and provide some steady fan cooling; they'll
run key-down all day.

....One thing to remember, though: do provide fan cooling! The fan doesn't 
need to be a bottled tornado, just steady air flow when transmitting.
