I think we are talking about two different things here. One is being able to connect and use Allstar in a particular network and the other is being able to port forward. Obviously if you cannot connect or use Allstar then port forwarding is just a secondary issue. 

The original poster was talking about being able to connect not port forwarding.

Verizon users have been very successful using Allstar remotely. Several users in my area are regularly using it and a user posted here several weeks ago about his success after a cross country trip. 

Unless you spend big bucks and get a static IP cell connection you will NOT be able to port forward on any cell system without using a VPN or other means.

This idea that you have to have port forwarding with Allstar is not warranted. I suspect many have come from Echolink or IRLP where it is required. It is NOT required with Allstar. I would venture to guess that better than 90% of the cell connected nodes are portable nodes used in cars, etc. In that case there would be no requirement or need to do remote administration. The box is with you. Use a monitor or direct wired connection for whatever you have to do. Most setup in these cases would be done at a home location anyway connected wired or to WIFI.

As far as connecting in is concerned I see this as another non issue. You can always connect out. So connect to somewhere where others know you will be connecting. This could be a personal home node or a node not owned by you. As long as you connect there and others know that is where you will be then you have a circuit. 

Stop sweating the port forwarding issue. There are work arounds that do not involve the complexity or in some case cost of a VPN.

  I have not known anyone to be successful with AT&T phone hotspots and Allstar. Thats not to say it can't be done you would just need to use a VPN. We are working on a likely fix for this that will be in a future code update. 

I know of several people who have switched to Verizon or some other service just because of this. The problem lies in the perceived public IP address in Allstar. It is not the same as the phone actual assigned public IP address. There is some form of NAT'ing going on in the AT&T system. Using AT&T your server will receive a public IP but either never register with Allstar or register but never get a node list.
