A couple things to add to the list

I do Search and Rescue work and have to deal with a lot of radios. The 
'traditional' way is to have a bunch of radios, each with a separate speaker and 
mic sitting in front of you.

What I've wanted to do for over a decade now is to be able to hook all the 
radios into one system that let me use one mic with a row of buttons for 
transmitting on different radios, and to have all the audio feeds combined into 
one stereo system with the ability for me to position each radio left-to-right 
within the sound field.

People have done this with massively complex analog setups, or with proprietary 
single-vendor systems, but doing it on a budget is _hard_.

It seems to me that using something like the allstar interfaces to the radios 
and doing the rest in software is a great option.

It also allows for the option to put the radios in a truck in a good location 
(or in my case, in an aircraft at a nice altitude) and have a digital link to 
the operator at a good location for controlling things.

For 'normal' hams, it would also allow for a much cleaner radio shack setup 
along with remote access to the radios.

This is why I'm so eagerly awaiting the next release that supports using 
unmodified USB dongles and the GPIO pins on the PIs :-)
