Not sure where you are at there. Are you sure you are using the hamvoip.org
image? Our images are archlinux and it would say your call ID or the
default ID which is W3XYZ and the local DHCP assigned IP address. All of
our images default to DHCP at start. There is no need or reason to add a
another user other than root.
If the levels are wrong you may hear a bunch of distortion. Set the TX and
RX levels in simpleusb-tune-menu
