Hi Kevin,

We've included hamlib with the hamvoip distro and it includes support for
about all the various Kenwood radios. See this webpage for more info about
hamlib: https://sourceforge.net/p/hamlib/wiki/Hamlib/

You can use the command-line tool "rigctl", which is an included 
application to access the library. Doug has documented a method of using 
the autopatch functions in app_rpt to conveniently send DTMF sequences to 
any user script or program, including rigctl. See the how-to notes on the

I have used the basic technique to control the G707, of which I have two. 
I feel certain it'll work with the TM-V71A, which is very similar to the 
D710, from an interface standpoint and is a later/upgraded version of the 
G707.

In a future hamvoip release of AllStar, we'll have a significantly 
improved method of interfacing hamlib or any other external applications 
with app_rpt. More details about this will be announced at a future date.

Okay, now I'll change subjects to automagically getting the programming
data to the radio. I've got two of Jim's control boards which have been
previously referenced (See: http://ohnosec.org/drupal/node/162 ). I
haven't tried this board with any radio besides the G707, but I fully
expect it would work with the D710, TM-V71A and other radios with
the mini-DIN 6 pin connector.

Now, take a look at the schematic for this control board:

All the magic is happening in the CD4053 logic switch chip, which is 
simplistically speaking just an electronic 3-pole-double-throw relay. 

I won't go into a circuit analysis in this message, the operation is 
simple, however, using a poorly documented but nifty feature found on the 
6-pin mini-DIN plug. That feature is that the PTT (pin 3) and COS (pin 6) 
signals serve dual purposes, based on the voltage (logic level) presented 
to pin 5....Pin 5, when asserted, will change the operation of PTT (pin 3) 
to TXD (TX data) and COS to RXD (RX data). So, instantly you can send 
RS232 serial data for radio control at 9600bps! Pretty neat!

This all happens based on the logic level of the RS232 DTR signal from
the computer. When DTR is asserted, the radio flips to remote-control 
mode. And, if not asserted, the radio is in normal mode, where PTT and COS 
act as expected.

....If this doesn't make sense, I'll try to give a better analysis.
