I have time Warner cable here in Hawaii and although I don't have tv thru them or phone, I was able to disable the routing and wireless in it. I use a apple router and it would not work with those settings on in the time warner modem. It wasn't hard to do. I can't remember how I did it. But, I found the info on Google. The people at the tech department were no help and couldn't access their own modem. Not sure if you can leave the phone option on as I turned mine off. The phone option is VOIP after all, I'm guessing, can't hurt to try.

TWC informed him that since he had all services, phone, TV, and Internet through them he would not be able to do that. They also said they do not authorized or allow port forwarding in their modem/router for security reasons.

I think the phone is the sticking point and it looks like you would need to have two modems if you had the phone. One supplied but them at no cost for the phone and the user supplied one. The signal would be split between them.
