If you have something with a 3.5 mm plug, all you need to do is touch your finger to the center lead and you should hear a blast of 120 Hz "hum".
*How* you hear it depends on the software you are running. There is a sound recorder accessory that comes free with Windows. That would do.

You’re absolutely correct. I didn’t think about until late last night that I should plug it into my laptop. I just have to purchase a computer desktop style microphone with a 3.5mm stereo connector in order to be able to test the mic input. For the 10uF cap, I used a 25 WVDC but it would be interesting to test the voltage across that cap...
