[arm-allstar] Scripts

I'd like to try my hand at writting scripts. I have a laptop setup with
ubuntu desktop. I have no idea if any of this exist, but is there a way to
write a script and test it in an environment so I don't hose up my node? I
was hoping I could experiment with something on my ubuntu desktop.
