Thanks Doug,
I'm getting a little nearer the explanation.
I am using fresh RPI2 image, no tinkering and yes, I figured that all
reports are that it is reliable and should work ok :-)
I have verified the iaxrpt installation (and tried two laptops and a PC
elsewhere).
When iaxrpt audio drops out, I can fix it temporarily with a "rpt reload" at
the asterisk console. Without touching iaxrpt, the audio returns.
So I have been playing around further.
My aim is to use iaxrpt to operate a remote radio. No repeater, no telemtry.
It is an emergency radio located in a remote mountain area and is to be used
for mountain rescue communication with the rest of the team using simplex
handheld radios.
I'm not using any form of COS. This particular model of radio doesn't have a
signal available, but it shouldn't matter. COS is used to determine when a
repeater should tansmit. This is not a repeater. The only time it should
transmit is when pressing the Iaxptt PTT. At all other times iaxrpt should
receive the audio stream from the receiver, even when it is squelched. i.e.
an audio steam that is quiet.
When I use rpt.conf in duplex=0 then I have the problem of audio dropout
after a while. Maybe soe kind of timeout, but it is random, sometimes after
10 seconds sometimes after 2 minutes.
So I tried it in duplex=2. The tx of course was on permanently because there
is no COS signal from the receiver and it thinks that the absence of COS
means a signal is present on the receiver that should be rebroadcast. That
makes sense. Out of curiousity I disconnect the PTT wire so apt-rpt thinks
that it is in transmit on a duplex repeater, but the radio itself is
effectively disabled from trasnmitting.
Of course the receiver is still feeding its audio to apt-rpt and in fact,
now I am able to operate iaxrpt for as long as I want to listen to the
signal. The drop out peoblem has gone away. Of course its no use, because
I've not got the PTT functionality any more because I put it in the "wrong"
duplex mode for my circumstances - but I thought it was an interesting piece
of evidence.
Three questions:
Should it be possible to remotely access a single radio in half duplex by
means of iaxrpt without a COS signal being available ?
Next question, if so, why can't it be done with the RPI2 image.
Do you think it is worthwhile trying usbradio and detecting the COS in order
to make it operate more like the usual configuration that is out there ?
Thanks and kind regards
Bernie

So, I need to go back to half-duplex and fix the problem. rpt reload
