Are you using the mic jack or the ext speaker jack for audio?

On my BBB simplex node I need more gain. I have the gain maxed out at 999. Using simpleusb-tune-menu I get 3.5 khz. I'd like a little more and some balance so I'm not at 999. Is there any boost available? I don't see anything,  my only other option is to use something other than the microphone port on the radio.
