John,
Ron put me onto the use of mouse extension cables.
I ended up using some KVM cables that I had laying around at work
to make a cable for Yaesu FT—817. Works great.
You can get the DB-25 male connector at Radio Shack that has
the individual pins that you can solder to and then push them into
the connector. I find that a lot easier to do than to try to solder the
backs of the pins when they are already in the connector. You end up
with a DB-25 connector that only has the 5 to 6 pins in it instead of
the complete 25 pins.

Great information, Ron! Thanks for that pearl. I was eyeing some extension cables at Radio Shack but thought they'd be shy of a wire or two. I'll revisit that approach.

Hi John,
During my packet days I've made cables that connected to the 6 pin din connector that is used for packet TNCs and now can be used for the Allstar URIx. I also got stuck on the fact that the mouse cable, usually you had spare mice laying around, didin't have all 6 wires connected to the molded connector. I've found that mice extension cables had all wires connected and 1 cable that are normally used for KVM switches can make 2 cables. You can get the connectors from Mouser but man are those solder connections small and hard to see :-)

The major hiccup in my node construction now is lack of a mini-din connector to tap into the data port on a Kenwood TMV-7. I thought I could sacrifice an old mouse cable, but the darned thing lacks wires on the proper pins. Cable is on order. In the mean time, I downloaded and installed Steve Henke's PTT Dispatcher (iaxrpt)
